Ancient and modern history run through the very core of Doune, Deanston and surrounding area. Standing stones dating back to 1800 BC mark the area’s earliest inhabitants, and the ruins of a Roman fort in the grounds of today’s Doune Primary School bring the past right into the present.
Then there’s the much loved Doune Castle which was home to aristocracy, the theatre of many battles and the backdrop to Monthy Python’s iconic film The Holy Grail.
The world famous Doune Pistols and the early industrial cotton mill settlement of Deanston are just two other historical highlights that mean the present remains firmly grounded in a proud past.
